Summary:

  • We learn to communicate both implicitly and explicitly.
  • Our implicitly communication learning comes naturally from imitation our closest communication models.
  • If we want to learn to communicate differently, it means creating new neural pathways in our brain, which takes intention, attention, and practice.

Self-Work for Today:

Take some time to reflect on these questions:
  • Who were your primary communication models?
  • What kind of things did they say, or not say?
  • What was their tone of voice like in different emotional states?
  • What kind of body language did they have?
  • How did they get people to do something for them?
  • How did they communicate in a group of people?
  • How did they communicate about “hot button” topics like politics or religion?
  • How did they communicate when they were angry or frustrated?
  • How about when they were scared or nervous?
  • How did they express their opinion or dislike of someone or something?
  • Anything else?

Courage. Compassion. Connection.
